Foodetective is a wearable food analyzer worn as a ring with a bluetooth-paired phone app. As a global food chain continues to erode, it may one day prove to be an invaluable tool to ensure personal food safety for the consumer.

What is "Speculative Design"
Speculative design is based on hypothetical solutions to possible future scenarios, providing answers when asked the question “what if?”. The design requires careful thought as to what environmental, social or economic scenarios may play out in the future and providing solutions based on these forecasts.
Design mission
Food security is becoming one of the biggest issues in our society. According to the world health organization (WHO), an estimated 600 million fall ill after eating contaminated food, resulting in approximately 420,000 deaths each year.
Population growth coupled with environmental damage has made food safety an increasingly important issue. Examples include the industrialization of the farming industry, overfishing and processed food substitutes. The net result has been an opaque global food chain where the modern consumer is unsure of what they are consuming on a daily basis. This trend is set to continue and is moving in the wrong direction.
Product Mock up and Branding
Foodetective is designed to be a convenient, wearable device not unlike rings in the market today which enable consumers to monitor their health through a linked phone app. The product was designed to evoke a sense of health and security. The color scheme is set in tone of dark green and beige to convey natural or organic imagery. The logo, "FD" is an easily identifiable acronym for the clever brand name and is encased by a circle stressing the security the device provides.
